Systemic lupus erythematosus, also known simply as lupus, is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body. Symptoms vary between people and may be mild to severe. Common symptoms include painful and swollen joints, fever, chest pain, hair loss, mouth ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, feeling tired, and a red rash which is most commonly on the face. Often there are periods of illness, called flares, and periods of remission during How Lupus Affects the Lungs About 50% of people with SLE will experience lung involvement during the course of their disease. Five main lung problems occur in lupus pleuritis, acute lupus pneumonitis, chronic fibrotic lupus pneumonitis, pulmonary hypertension, and “shrinking lung” syndrome. Discoid lupus erythematosus is the most common type of chronic cutaneous lupus CCLE, an autoimmune skin condition on the lupus erythematosus spectrum of illnesses. It presents with red, inflamed, coin-shaped patches of skin with a scaling and crusty appearance, most often on the scalp, cheeks, and ears.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is more common among blacks and Asians than whites. Of all cases, 70 to 90% occur in women (usually of child-bearing age).

Unlike chronic cutaneous lupus, subacute cutaneous lupus does not usually cause scarring, but skin discoloration can occur. Acute cutaneous lupus is the most common rash identified with systemic lupus erythematosus. Chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus includes discoid lupus erythematosus, lupus erythematosus profundus, chilblain cutaneous lupus, and lupus tumidus. Diagnosis of these diseases requires proper classification of the subtype, through a combination of physical exam, laboratory studies, histology, antibody serology, and occasionally direct immunofluorescence, while ensuring to exclude systemic disease. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis or juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. It is not clear why hydroxychloroquine is effective at treating autoimmune diseases.

I was told from the start by my rheumatologist I would have to have eye exams including visual field exams every six months due to the plaquenil therapy. But my next six month appointment is coming up, and they told me I didn't need the visual field test this time so the appointment would be shorter. After two normal visual field exams, does that mean further visual field testing need be done at less frequent intervals, despite continuing plaquenil therapy?
